3) Use our voices peaceful, empowering, and inspire
4) Create a safe space for the opportunity to heal from historic injustices
Black Lives Matter Preston was established in response to the tragic murder of George Floyd. We wanted a safe and secure place where people can come together. George was a victim of police brutality, at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer as three of his colleagues watched on. All have since been fired, arrested, and charged with various degrees of murder and manslaughter. Their trials are pending. George was an innocent man, and most importantly George was a dad, a proud black man, a son, a friend, a valued and loved member of his community and family. He and his family deserve justice.
George’s case is sadly not the first of its kind, with the names of countless victims of police brutality in America, ringing in the world’s ears. Police brutality is not just an American issue though, and the UK has much to answer.
Alongside police brutality, systemic and systematic racism run deep in Britain. First-hand accounts of racial profiling, stop and search, racial abuse, racism within the workplace, victims of the Windrush scandal, and Grenfell, are all being shared by those subject to these horrific acts firsthand and talked about by all, arguably more than ever in the history of Britain.
Disparities in school attainment, housing, rate of arrests, rate of imprisonment, rate of youth offender programmes, and most recently, in rates of covid-19 deaths, shows us now more than ever, that anti-blackness and racism as a whole is a huge British issue.
We must demand justice, we must demand change, for now, and for forever.
This group was born from an existing local group, the Preston Windrush Generation and Descendants UK, established in March 2019.
